The Kids Are Both Asleep (at 7pm!)

I think I have gotten so used to a child that doesn't nap (Laney) that I forgot that most babies need to nap (Kiah). Poor thing only slept for an hour and 15 minutes this morning. By the time it was 5pm and he started looking sleepy, I said "Oh no, little guy. I know what happens when children nap this late. No sleep for you until after dinner!". So, we strapped him into the Snuggli (think cheap Baby Bjorn), and went outside to walk on the beach. The ocean air perked him right up. He barely made it through his steamed rice and spring rolls, before I fed him his bottle and he passed out. While he was downing his formula, Laney said, "I think I'm going to take a nap" and fell asleep too! So, I am free to come to the lobby and catch up on the blog and emails guilt free. Like Perry said, we are not able to send emails from here, but can receive them. Not sure why, but once we get back to Hanoi, things should be back to normal.
Kiah is still doing well. He laughs when Laney laughs, even if he is not sure what he is laughing about. I think she has really helped the transition for him. There were several young girls at the orphanage about Laney's age, and they seemed to enjoy playing with the babies alot, so I think the sight and sounds of her comforts him. He is playful and a fast crawler. Our room has Spanish tile floors, so we have kept him on the bed. He loves diving from the bed (which is very low to the floor) to his crib (which is even lower to the floor) and them climbing back up. He also thinks it is fun to drop his toys on the floor and watch Mommy and Daddy pick them up. Little does he know that Mommy and Daddy will stop participating in this game once we are home and settled, or when our backs give out, whichever comes first.
I was going to post some pictures from today, but the camera battery died before I could download them. So instead, I have chosen some scenes from his orphanage. Perry and I never had a chance to visit Laney's orphanage, so we didn't know what to expect. It was surreal walking up the stairs to the open-air "baby room" and scanning the room for Kiah. When we walked in, he had on a pink sweater, so I didn't think it was him. One of the nannies quickly took it off of him, and put on a much thicker sweater with a pig on it, and some yellow "Power Rangers" pants. The children all slept on 3 big cots that were covered with straw mats. From what I could understand, his primary nanny slept with him and another little girl on the cot at night. He was very well taken care of and loved, as were all the children from what we saw. The pictures I have posted are some views of the room he has spent the last year of his life in and the children that he has grown up with. We are so grateful for the care and love he has received and for the opportunity to give him all that and more as he grows up in our family.

I'm so glad to hear everyone is doing so great! Charge that camera battery! Is the blond woman with the headband in the picture where you are feeding Kiah your traveling companion? We miss and love you all lots!

Hi from Leland --- We are pleased that the New Mom could get a brief break. We think we have found your hotel via the internet. Looks like a cool place. I had the same problem of being able to receive but not send e-mails. It is due to incompatibility of your home e-mail service and that of your current location. To fix it would require you to enter a lot of new codes in your laptop, which would have to be redone when you relocate. Probably best to leave things as they are so the system will work in Hanoi. We tried to dial your hotel number, but did not succeed. We have both become Allen Blog junkies, checking frequently for updates. We are thrilled that the first 2 days together have gone so well for the FOUR of you. Love from Grampie.

The best news. He is healthy and is adjusting so well. Thank you for the information about the orphanage and the care they gave Kiah. Laney is such a little trooper. I know she has been a big help with her little brother. What a experience for her. She will have great stories to tell Kiah about the day she first saw him. Tell her how proud I am of her. We can't thank you and Perry enough for bringing Laney and Kiah into our family. Thank you so much and love to everyone. Mom
I will try to send this only once.
Scuttle is fine.

I am SO happy for you guys!! I can't believe you're finally with Kiah. He is absolutely adorable- I could eat him up. I can tell from the video and pictures that Laney is going to be an extremely attentive big sis. We can't wait to meet him next summer when he's running around on the beach : ) Love, Lara

I just realized it's not your hand holding the fork that's feeding Kiah. Yep, took me 12 hours to figure that out! Sharp as a tack, I am!

Hi Perry, Emily, Laney, and Kiah! I'm so glad that things have been going so smoothly for you all. I'm checking your blog several times a day and calling Mom almost daily with updates. She has been to Frances's house to check out the blog and tried to call the hotel number several times without success. Kiah is so cute, and it looks like Laney is enjoying her new role as big sister. We hope everything continues to go well, and we can't wait to meet Kiah.
Love, Lori

We have enjoyed catching up on the Allen whereabouts since we saw you in early November -- so happy to see what a special Christmas you all will share in another part of the world! Keep us updated; we are currently in Utah celebrating our 10th anniversary with some skiing and snowmobiling. Love to you all!
